Kim's Coffee Shop

Photographer: Mike Kraynak
Date: March 24, 2006
Place: Penn Avenue near Roup, Garfield, Pittsburgh
Why this sign?
I recently learned of the closing of Kim's, my favorite restaurant on Penn Ave. Any idea when they closed or if she was part of the "tear down the neighborhood and replace it with newer stuff" program ? I don't have to tell you how good that food was. Or the fact that often when I ate there, me and my friend would be the only ones there. It was like we had our own private restaurant. I will sure miss that place and those delicious pork skewers.

Long time no see, indeed.
Thanks, Mike, for pointing this out. I don't think this is a case of making way for new things, but the owner's personal decision. Maybe Spice Island Teahouse will set up a franchise here and continue the Pan-Asian tradition.

I stopped by today and saw the sign as well. Kim's husband was outside and explained that Kim has been very ill from a surgery that she had in January. It didn't sound good.
She is a great lady and has served the best Asian food in the city for 20+ years. Send her a card if you can.

I will really miss them, and I even used to know one of the daughters of the family, years and years ago-- we went to school together. However, we stopped eating there about one and a half years ago becuase my boyfriend ended up receiving hair in his food one too many times, so he didn't want to go anymore.

An obituary on Mai Khuu appears in today's P-G.

I am an old friend of the Kim Coffee Shop owners. The owner, Mrs. Mai Hong Khuu, passed away on June 23rd 2006.
It is very likely that the shop will remain permanently closed.
Please keep the family in your hearts and prayers. Full Obituary found here:
